Step into the magic of one of Northumberland’s ancient woodlands this autumn and discover an incredible world of edible mushrooms, medicinal plants and seasonal wild food.
Ancient woodland is one of the richest habitats for fungi, making October an exciting time to explore. As the canopy turns to gold and the woodland floor becomes carpeted with leaves, a fascinating variety of mushrooms begin to emerge, while many edible and medicinal plants, berries and seeds remain abundant.

Autumn is a truly magical time to explore ancient woodland.
As the trees glow with shades of gold and copper, the woodland floor comes alive with an incredible diversity of mushrooms, while the hedgerows and forest edges continue to offer an abundance of edible and medicinal plants, berries, seeds and roots.
Join Wild Roots tutor Cheryl for a relaxed and inspiring three-hour foraging walk through one of Northumberland’s beautiful ancient woodlands, where you’ll learn how to safely identify edible mushrooms alongside the wild plants that have nourished and healed people for generations.
Designed especially for beginners, this walk will help you build confidence in recognising common edible species, understanding the key features used for identification, and appreciating the important role fungi play within the woodland ecosystem.

You’ll also discover the edible and medicinal plants that continue to thrive well into autumn, learning their traditional uses, folklore and how they can be incorporated into everyday life.
Along the way, Cheryl will share fascinating stories about the woodland, seasonal ecology and the remarkable relationships between trees, fungi and the natural world, helping you see the forest through completely new eyes.

Cheryl is an experienced Wild Roots foraging tutor with a passion for helping people reconnect with nature through safe, enjoyable and inspiring foraging experiences.
Her friendly, down-to-earth teaching style makes learning accessible for everyone, whether you’re completely new to foraging or looking to deepen your knowledge. Cheryl loves sharing not only how to identify wild foods safely, but also the stories, folklore and traditional wisdom that bring our native plants and fungi to life.

As with all foraging, what we find changes throughout the season and cannot be guaranteed but every walk offers a wonderful opportunity to learn from whatever nature is sharing that day.

As usual, we will be providing some wild food tasters.
Please do let us know well in advance of any allergies.
We are unable to cater for dietary needs without plenty of notice, as the dishes are planned and food sourced in ahead of the event.
