A shorter, more affordable way to experience foraging with Wild Roots.
We know that our longer foraging experiences aren’t accessible to everyone, whether that’s because of cost, time, mobility, energy levels or simply being unsure whether foraging is for you.
So Ruby is offering this relaxed 90-minute autumn taster walk – a chance to slow down, explore what’s growing wild around us and begin learning how to safely identify some of the season’s edible treasures.
Perfect for complete beginners, anyone curious about foraging, or those who would simply prefer a shorter and more affordable way to join us.

A relaxed introduction to autumn foraging
Autumn is one of the most exciting times to begin exploring the wild food growing all around us.
Join Wild Roots tutor Ruby for a relaxed 90-minute wander, discovering some of the edible plants, fruits, seeds and fungi that can be found at this abundant time of year.
This shorter walk has been created to make our foraging experiences accessible to more people. Whether a longer walk is difficult because of cost, time, mobility or energy levels, or you simply fancy dipping your toe into the world of wild food before committing to a longer experience, this is a lovely place to start.
What you’ll learn
During your walk, Ruby will introduce you to a selection of seasonal wild foods and help you begin building the skills needed to forage safely and confidently.
You’ll learn about:
- Identifying some of our common autumn wild foods
- The key features to look for when identifying a plant or mushroom
- What’s in season and where you’re likely to find it
- Edible uses and ideas for taking wild ingredients into your kitchen
- Important poisonous lookalikes and how to avoid them
- Responsible and sustainable foraging
- Some of the folklore, traditional uses and stories surrounding the species you meet
Exactly what you discover will depend entirely on what nature provides on the day and that’s part of the magic of foraging.
Who is this walk for?
Absolutely no previous knowledge is needed.
This experience is particularly suited to complete beginners, people curious about foraging who aren’t quite ready for one of our longer walks, and anyone who would prefer a shorter and more affordable way to learn with us.
Rather than trying to cover everything in one afternoon, the aim is to give you a fascinating first glimpse into the wild food world and help you start noticing just how much is growing beneath your feet.
A little different from our longer experiences
Our usual Wild Roots walks allow several hours for deeper identification, exploration and, depending on the event, wild food tastings, cooking or fireside food.
This 90-minute taster is intentionally simpler.
There’ll be no big wild feast or lengthy cooking session – instead, the focus is on getting outside with an experienced forager, learning some really useful identification skills and discovering what autumn has to offer.
It’s a small taste of the Wild Roots experience, at a price that makes joining us possible for more people.
